Appeal: Mark Kane dismissed at suspectNamed in the documentary, Mark Kane is dismissed as a potential suspect at appeal. However, the earlier failure of the police to eliminate him as a suspect is distressing from Cane, who passes away in 2018. The risks that eyewitnesses could have confused Kane for Mitchell are dismissed though judges confirm the similarity in colouring and build. Kane was known to wear a parka coat.
-
Verdict of Appeal"The case against the appellant was wholly circumstantial. There was no direct evidence that he was responsible for the murder of Jodi Jones." ref The appeal judges point to a missing knife. Though Mitchell carried knives prior to the murder, his fishing knife and multitool were taken by police. A skunting knife bought after the murder was handed in by Mitchells solicitor after the police seized its empty pouch in a raid. It is not known how the judges came to believe the knife was missing. Issues around media attention, pre-trial publicity and local hysteria prejudicing the trial remain. That such risks may have been compounded by a trial heard locally, the appeal verdict was that this decision was left to the discretion of the trial judge. Issues around witness identification remain. That the Mitchell's dog Mia, was a training tracker dog, was not explored. The Lord Justice Clerk, Lord Gill said, "There is no doubt that the appellant is an unsympathetic individual. There is also no doubt as to the strength of public outrage in Dalkeith and beyond. Since the appellant will not even be considered for parole until he is almost 36, the chances of his being rehabilitated and making something of his life will be gravely prejudiced. The prospects of his becoming institutionalised beyond hope of recall will be significant."

Cupid's a Psycho
Cupid's a Psycho

Cupid's a Psycho is a young adult novel, also intended for any who remember what it was to be a very young adult experiencing the intensity of friendships, sexual awakenings and the joy of new found intimacy, independence and individuality.

When I was ages with the characters, the Scottish Parliament was new, as was peace in Northern Ireland. The World Trade Centre was still standing. Stepping out into the world of today, is a lot harder in a competitive, ecologically damaged world. I understand and respect that, but still have a lot of faith in the wisdom of young people to navigate it.
“I’ve a lot more than a speck of faith. More like a…”

“A spoonful?” Blithe volunteered.
“A bag. A big bag.”
The Story

Why would a young girl share footage of a break-up? Humiliating, personal footage.
If that footage was of your best friend, would you help that girl? Could you trust such a person? Would it be awful to support such a person...even kiss, such a person?

And could your friend ever forgive you if you did?

Glasgow

A city whose character in literature is often clouded under concrete skies, drug addiction and domestic abuse. There is darkness it's true but a great deal of light that gets in, in such a wonderful, diverse city.

I did not escape Glasgow, my circumstances took me away for a very long time and I missed it. Consequently I may have a rose-tinted view, but I feel it's high time someone did.

The name
A play on Cupid and Psyche, a tale from Ovid's Metamorphoses. I could lie, and say that was my intention early on but I saw a portrait of Cupid and Psyche in a gallery in Manchester and for a second simply misread it. I thought of the language of teenagers, the tendency towards hyperbole. "She's pure psycho by the way."
